​​Congratulations from The University of Alabama Black Faculty and Staff Association on the amazing accomplishment of your upcoming graduation from The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. This email serves as your invitation to the Black Faculty and Staff Association's Kente Robing Ceremony, Nyansapo. Nyansapo is a Ghanaian symbol that means intelligence, ingenuity, and patience. Kente is a ceremonial cloth used for occasions such as this one. 

The BFSA Nyansapo Kente robing ceremony was started in the summer of 2016 to promote retention amongst undergraduate and graduate students of color and celebrate their academic accomplishments. In addition, the Kente robing ceremony provides the BSFA community an opportunity to highlight the significance of those students graduating from The University of Alabama. 

Nyansapo will take place for the Spring Nyansapo 2023 Graduates and their guests in person, Wednesday, May 3. 2023, at 5:00 p.m. CST at the Bryant Conference Center- Sellers Auditorium. We will stream this event Live on our BFSA Facebook page: UABFSA  (https://www.facebook.com/uabfsa). Please Like Us!


Need to know: 
  • Registration will begin as early as 3:30 p.m. and close at 4:30 p.m. at the Bryant Conference Center on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 Guests may arrive with you to take pictures and attend the UA Supe Store Exhibit.
  • The UA Supe Store will be onsite for your convenience to purchase UA brand products and graduation regalia. You may arrive early to attend their exhibit.
  • Both the BFSA Kente Stole and the BFSA Black Excellence Cord must be bought through the UA Supe Store. You may purchase both either online or onsite at the Student Center Location. 
  • Graduates should be in full graduation regalia (graduation robe, stole, cords) – Special Guest (business attire).
  • Graduates will line up for the opening processional at 4:50 pm, upper deck lobby.  
  • As an additional gift to help you remember this special occasion, we, BFSA, will have a photo booth available for you to take photos with your family, friends and fellow graduates at no cost. Those photos will immediately upload to your phone or email addresses. 
  • There will be a reception at the conclusion of the program for you and your guests.

  • The R.S.V.P. deadline is Friday, April 28th at 11:59 p.m. CST. Click here to R.S.V.P. (If you miss this deadline, please note that we will not be able to accommodate your participation in this event due to logistics and planning efforts.)​
 
Kente Ceremony Details:
When your group is called to the stage, graduates will line up the left, "special guest" will go to the right –
    a. Please line up near the steps of the stage. 
    b. You will enter on the left side of the stage; your "special guest will enter on the right side of the stage
    c. You will meet in the middle of the stage; this is where your "special guest" will Robe you with the Kente Cloth
    d. You both will exit the stairs at the center of the stage and return to your seats.
    e. After the event, you may take professional photos if you hadn't done so prior to the event.
    f. If you do not have a "special guest" to Robe you – A BFSA Faculty or Staff Member, will gladly participate in the Ceremony with you

2023 Fall Graduates R.S.V.P.

Purpose

 The Nyansapo Kente robing ceremony was started in the summer of 2016 as an initiative to promote retention amongst undergraduate and graduate students of color, and to celebrate their accomplishments. The Kente robing ceremony provides the BSFA community an opportunity to highlight the significance of graduating from The University of Alabama.
